MANILA, Philippines — For those who want a taste of the hamburger popularized by former Commission on Elections chairman Benjamin Abalos, the former government official has opened an outlet in Mandaluyong City.

The now famous “Ben’s Burjer” has its original home at the Wack-Wack Golf and Country Club where Abalos and other players in the controversial national broadband network agreement that includes First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo had met with officials of China’s ZTE Corp.

“It is a merienda outlet…this [burger is from] the same source so the public can go…since Wack-Wack is private,” said Abalos in a phone interview with INQUIRER.net.

The burger in “Ben’s Burjer” tastes exactly like those being served in Wack-Wack although the price was cheaper, said Abalos.

I want to read more books…

..but by the time I get home from work, I’m so tired all I want to do is sleep. Or maybe I’m so overdosed with words because of reading updates on the site the whole day that I can’t even lift a page.

Bad me. I need to read because I treat reading as an exercise. Reading is like my practice if I was an athlete.  Reading is also a therapy for me.

And I pity the books waiting to be explored. :( Just this February, I bought 6 books; 2 books last January–majority of them left untouched to this hour.

I started reading Salman Rushdie’s Satanic Verses (oh what a pity, I should have read this ages ago). The book was a gift from my college professor before he left for Australia last 2006 and I just started reading it last month. I’m half done, but I don’t like it much anymore. Maybe because it was too heavy a plot to follow. I might read it soon again. I’m now reading Lady Chatterley’s Lover.

So obviously, my books have been accumulating dust and I hate that. I just hate that. I think I’m going to sleep really late tonight and prevent myself from opening my laptop. (Oh I need to find my other books, they’re scattered all over the house!)

Internet is a big big distraction. Grrr. Why can’t I hit that log-out button?

Soaring rice prices

Starting today, I will try to familiarize myself with other sources of carbohydrates like bread (I rarely eat bread!), potato, or other rice alternatives like corn.

At least that would make one less rice-eating Filipino. And that would mean I no longer have to partake in the decreasing rice supply.
It’s really depressing to hear news of rice price hike. It’s sad to know that the world’s food supply had been decreasing due to global warming, land conversion, and soaring prices of fertilizers.  What’s happening??

My Mom and I went to the grocery yesterday and we were surprised at the prices of basic commodities! I’ve been also thinking of buying one sack of rice, just in case. But one sack of rice would be too much for me and my Mom, and we rarely eat at home. Tsk.

Hay. At least we’re still lucky. Unlike in Africa.

“Forty people died during price riots in Cameroon in February. There also have been deadly troubles in Ivory Coast and Mauritania and other violent demonstrations in Senegal and Burkina Faso — where a nationwide strike against price rises is to start Tuesday,” Agence France- Presse reported.

Hay grabe. :(
